Fireplace Fenders

Fireplace fenders used to provide an important function before the days of a raised hearth.  Most homes had a fireplace which was on the same level as the floor, so homeowners used fireplace fenders to create a boundary around the fireplace.  The fenders would create a safe area around the fire as well as to help keep logs from escaping.
